When one begins their public speaking journey it is only natural to feel some Fear. I always say that FEAR is False Evidence Appearing Real. The best way to tackle it is to start by Embracing That Fear.

Man confidently giving a speech

Use that fear not as something to be scared of, but as a positive that helps drive you to partake on a new experience and journey. Follow these steps:

1) Make Your Speech Your Own- If the speech that is to be delivered has been written by someone else, work on it by reading and re-reading it. The aim should be to truly internalise the core message and phrase it in words that one is comfortable with. Avoid mugging up or learning it by Rote. The more we understand the context the greater we will be able to make the message our own.

On the other hand if one is writing their own speech keep it simple and to the point. Address the key message that needs to be given without trying to use big words that may seem alien. Remember there is beauty in simplicity and when one is comfortable with the words our authenticity shines through.

2) Practice- Once we are comfortable with the flow of our speech it's time to practice. Practice in front of a mirror and in front of your peers/ friends and family. Imagine your family and friends to be your audience and interact with them. Use non verbal cues like eye contact, gestures etc. If one of them smiles, smile back.

3) Feedback- Get honest feedback from your family and friends and make a note of what they have said with an open mind. We should acknowledge the areas where we may be lacking, then work on improving.

4) Record Yourself - Now Record yourself by propping your phone on a tripod and play it back. Monitor your progress over time. See how you evolve over a period of time and work on improving your body language, your speech structure, your tone etc. Focus on your delivery. If there's a line in the speech that evokes empathy, work on an empathetic tone. If a line is meant to motivate, say it in a tone that makes your audience feel motivated. I assure you will see how your confidence levels improve over a period of time.

5) Visualisation- Once ready with the material and you feel you have got in a good amount of practice, Visualize yourself delivering a successful speech. Imagine the audience reacting positively, applauding, and engaging with your message. This positive visualization can help alleviate fear and boost confidence.

In addition work towards Positive Self Talk. Remind yourself about how you have overcome challenges in the past and your Public Speaking journey is another challenge that you are excited to tackle and take up with confidence.
